Phase 1: Foundation & Static GK Months 1-5

Build a strong base in Indian History, Polity, Geography (especially West Bengal), and select an Optional Subject.

  • Read standard books like Laxmikanth for Polity and Spectrum for Modern History.
  • Study the Geography of West Bengal thoroughly from a state-specific guide (e.g., Kartik Chandra Mandal).
  • Start fundamental preparation for your chosen Optional Subject (if aiming for Group A/B).
  • Maintain a daily habit of reading an English newspaper and a Bengali newspaper.
Phase 2: Mains Integrated Preparation Months 6-9

Extensive answer writing for languages, deep dive into GS-II (Science/Environment), and Optional completion.

  • Practice writing reports, letters, and precise in both English and Bengali (Paper I & II) weekly.
  • Cover Mains Paper IV topics (Technology, Environment, CRZ guidelines, Global Warming).
  • Practice objective Mathematics and Reasoning targeting the Madhyamik level.
  • Complete both papers of the Optional Subject and make short revision notes.
Phase 3: Prelims Mode & Final Revision Months 10-12

Shift strictly to objective MCQ solving, mock tests, and Current Affairs.

  • Solve previous 10 years WBCS Prelims question papers to understand WBPSC patterns.
  • Take full-length mock tests for Prelims to master time management (200 questions in 2.5 hours).
  • Revise the last 1 year of Current Affairs, with special emphasis on West Bengal state schemes.

Overview

WBCS is the premier civil service examination of West Bengal, recruiting for top administrative and police roles in the state. The selection process consists of three stages: Preliminary Examination (Objective, Screening), Main Examination (Conventional/Objective mix, determines merit), and the Personality Test. Group A & B require an Optional Subject in Mains, while Group C & D do not.

Eligibility

Educational Qualification A degree from a recognized University. Ability to read, write, and speak in Bengali (not required for candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali).
Age Limit 21 to 36 years (as on 1st January of the examination year) | Min 20 years for Group B (Police Service) years
Age Relaxation SC/ST (WB only): +5 years | OBC (Non-Creamy Layer, WB only): +3 years | PwBD: up to 45 years
