Tier-I: Computer Based Examination

An objective-type multiple-choice examination consisting of 100 questions (25 each from English, Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness) to be completed in 60 minutes.

Marks obtained are used to shortlist candidates for Tier-II. It is generally screening in nature for the final merit, as recent SSC patterns base final merit primarily on Tier-II.

Preparation Timeline

Suggested phase-by-phase study plan

Phase 1: Foundation & Accuracy Months 1-2

Clear basic concepts for Tier-I and establish typing habits.

  • Master English Grammar fundamentals (Tenses, Voice, Narration) and start daily vocabulary reading.
  • Complete Arithmetic basics (Percentage, Ratio, Profit & Loss, Simple/Compound Interest).
  • Familiarize with standard Reasoning patterns (Series, Coding-Decoding, Analogy).
  • Start touch typing practice for 20-30 minutes daily to build muscle memory.
Phase 2: Speed Building & Advanced Math Months 3-4

Increase solving speed for Tier-I and learn Advanced Mathematics.

  • Study Advanced Maths (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration) using shortcut techniques.
  • Solve Chapter-wise SSC PYQs for the last 3 years to understand the TCS pattern.
  • Read Static GK (Lucent) and memorize recent Current Affairs.
  • Increase typing practice to achieve an initial target of 20-25 wpm.
Phase 3: Mock Tests & Tier-II Alignment Months 5-6

Time management under 60 minutes for Tier-I, and preparing for Tier-II depth.

  • Take full-length Tier-I Mock Tests 2-3 times a week; analyze time spent on Quant vs. Reasoning.
  • Start studying basic Computer Knowledge (MS Office, Networking) to prepare for the qualifying Tier-II module.
  • Attempt higher-level reading comprehension to align with Tier-II English standards.
  • Hit the strict typing target (35 wpm for English / 30 wpm for Hindi) with high accuracy.

Overview

SSC CHSL is a major national-level examination for 12th-pass candidates to secure clerical and data entry positions in various Ministries, Departments, and Offices of the Government of India. The examination consists of two tiers of Computer Based Examination (Tier-I and Tier-II), with Tier-II including a mandatory Skill/Typing Test.

Nationality Citizen of India, Subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated with the intention of permanently settling in India
